Superstar Lionel Messi beat defender Diego Carlos but escaped the penalty card, in the match between Barca and Sevilla in La Liga on the evening of June 19.
In the third minute of injury time of the first half, centre-back Jules Kounde fouled Luis Suarez. The ball bounced and just as the referee blew the whistle, Carlos broke the ball away with the underside of his shoe. After touching the ball, the bottom of Carlos’s shoe grazed Messi’s left calf. Messi didn’t fall, turned around and punched Carlos in the face. The Sevilla central defender fell down to show pain, and players from both teams rushed in to intervene. Some of the players tease each other.
After the situation cooled down, referee Jose Luis Gonzalez showed a yellow card to Sergio Busquets and Sevilla midfielder – Fernando. Messi and Carlos were not booked.
According to the survey, 46% of Marca readers think that Messi deserves a direct red card. 34% of readers want Messi and Carlos to get yellow cards.
This match Messi and Carlos were both penalized twice, but were also not carded. Messi failed to score 700th career goal. Barca drew 0-0 with Sevilla and continued to hold the top of the table with three points more than Real Madrid. But, they lost the right to self-determination because Real played one game short.
Messi has played 721 matches for Barca, never being red carded. He was twice red carded in the Argentina team shirt, in August 2005 and July 2019 . In both of these situations, Messi was sent off for cold hitting.
