The manager’s record of being sacked, Erling Haaland shining brightly or Chelsea’s disastrous decline creates a dramatic 2022/23 Premier League season.
The BBC believes that fans have just witnessed a crazy Premier League season in many respects. Even if it takes a few months to make room for the 2022 World Cup, the attraction of the most fierce tournament in the world has not diminished.
The record of the coach being fired
There have been a total of 14 times teams have changed captains in the Premier League this season. Chelsea, Leeds United and Southampton are the teams that have sacked coaches twice.
If you include the interim coaches, the Premier League sees the appearance of 39 military leaders. Only 9 out of 20 teams finished the season with a single coach.
According to Opta, this is the season with the most managers losing their jobs in Premier League history. The previous record belonged to the 2013/14, 2017/18 and 2021/22 seasons with 10 coaches losing their jobs.
Leicester City, Leeds and Southampton, the three teams that suffered relegation this season, all ended the season with short-term coaches out of contract.
Chelsea are set to appoint Mauricio Pochettino to replace Frank Lampard, who started this season as manager of Everton. Roy Hodgson and Ryan Mason are also out of contract at Crystal Palace and Tottenham respectively.
Arsenal out of breath at the end of the season
For most of the season, fans believed Arsenal could win their first domestic title since 2003/04. In mid-March, the “Gunners” were 8 points more than Man City. Coach Mikel Arteta’s team spent 248 days leading the rankings, the longest time a club could not be crowned at the end of the season.
Man City showed the ability to save impressive scores in the sprint. Since being taken over by Pep Guardiola in 2016, City have won 21-30 points in the last 10 games of a Premier League season, averaging 2.43 points per game.
Arsenal’s 1-4 loss to Man City at the Etihad was a turning point that changed the title race. After this confrontation, Man City won 5 consecutive matches and was crowned the Premier League champion.
Haaland record holder
In his first season playing in England, Erling Haaland surprised the public with his impressive scoring ability. The former Dortmund star finished 38 rounds with 36 goals, winning the title of Premier League scorer 2022/23. He is far ahead of second-placed Harry Kane (30 goals). Haaland also broke the record for most goals scored in the Premier League by duo Andy Cole and Alan Shearer (34 goals).
Haaland also won the title of “Player of the Season” and “Young Player of the Season” in the Premier League. He owns 52 goals in all competitions, breaking the previous record held by Mohamed Salah (2017/18) and Ruud van Nistelrooy (2002/03) with 44 goals together. He also became the player to score the most goals in a season at Man City, breaking the record of Tommy Johnson (38 goals in the 1928/29 season).
Haaland’s goalscoring talent helped Man City win the Premier League for the 5th time in the last 6 years. “The Cityzens” have the opportunity to eat three times this season if they are crowned in the FA Cup and Champions League.
Chelsea dared but still failed
The Blues” set a transfer record when spending nearly £600 million upgrading the squad in the last two transfer windows.A series of expensive rookies landed at Stamford Bridge such as Enzo Fernandez, Mykhailo Mudryk, Wesley Fofana or Marc Cucurella In which, Fernandez became the most expensive contract in Premier League history (£107 million).
But in return for strong investment from the owners, Chelsea showed poor performance on the pitch. “The Blues” finished the season in 12th place, without tickets to next season’s European Cup. The last time the club finished the season in the bottom half of the table was in the 1995/96 season.
Unpredictable relegation race
As of March 31, there are 9 teams still facing the risk of relegation. The gap between the teams is only 3-4 points, in the context of the Premier League, there are 10-11 rounds left to close.
This is the first time since the 2017/18 season that the first relegation team has been determined after round 35 (Southampton). By the last round, there were 3 teams, Leicester, Leeds and Everton, who had to compete for the last relegation spot.
Abdoulaye Doucoure became a hero to help Everton beat Bournemouth 1-0 and successfully stay relegated. Leeds and Leicester must join Southampton to play in the Championship next season.
