The two seasons that Lionel Messi spent with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) were a disaster when the capital team lost in the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League to Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, but in the national team it was different.
During his time with the French giants, the 35-year-old won the FIFA World Cup 2022 with the Argentina national team in Qatar last December. Prime Video analyst Thierry Henry explains why Messi is so successful with the Tango national team and not at PSG.
“It’s not easy to conduct an orchestra with three conductors” – former France player Henry shared – “In the Argentina team, Messi is the boss. You can see how the players look at him with admiring eyes. They can die for Messi. When Leo feels it, he can’t play through the speakers. It’s different at PSG.”
Messi still wants to stay in Europe to compete in the UEFA Champions League as he hasn’t won the title in almost 10 years, with the seven Ballon d’Or winner’s last win being in 2015.
There are rumors that Messi is scouting goodwill from many European clubs, and the Argentine is desperate to win the Champions League elsewhere. FC Barcelona is a good venue as Messi is about to become a free agent, but it all depends on their financial situation.
On the PSG side, they want the veteran goalscorer to reduce his salary requirements, but Messi is said to not want that. If Messi intends to continue in Europe, the next few months will be interesting to see where he puts pen to paper.
Talks about Lionel Messi’s future continue as the Argentine is out of contract with the French giants in June. Analyst Thierry Henry has discussed the future of the FIFA World champion. Cup 2022 and share what Messi should do this summer.
“I want to see Messi finish his career at Barca” – Henry shared – “The way he left this club, I don’t like it very much. I’m not saying Messi two years ago had to go or not go, but they need to sit back and handle it thoroughly, with reasonableness.”
Now, the opportunity for Messi to leave PSG is even clearer when the club’s supporters do not seem to like him. They just booed and whistled Messi during PSG’s 0-1 loss at the Parc des Princes home to Lyon on the morning of 3-4.
According to Henry, it is best for the two sides to part ways this summer, leaving PSG to go in a different direction. With the salary that Messi demands, the Ligue 1 team can add two or three other quality players. The 2022-2023 season shows that the French capital team does not have enough depth because it has to cope with injuries.
More importantly, PSG does not necessarily have many leaders on the field at the same time. The breakup sometimes brings other benefits to Messi and the rich French guy.
